Why Go

“Sitting on the steps of my soul in the deep, deep place where nobody goes.” - Jill Briscoe

Why go into the deep, deep place? What’s in there anyway? Who will I find?

Maybe the “deep calling unto the deep” happens for the lucky few. I don’t believe it but maybe it’s true. Maybe only a few people have a deep sense of longing, an insatiable desire for an unnamed “more.” Maybe all the Facebook scrolling, online shopping, drug addiction, violence, disordered eating, Snapchatting, naked selfies, overdoses, adulterating, numbing - perhaps none of this has anything to do with a deeper longing inside. Perhaps this is your best life. Where are you are is exactly where you want to be.

And perhaps not. Maybe you feel a scratch that occasionally translates as a tingle and other times like legions of nails on a chalkboard.

I only know why I go. Because it’s saved my life. Twice.

Some of us get called into a deep, deep darkness. For me, it happened for the first time in sixth grade. What I learned then was not to run from it or to settle into it. But to get curious about it. I looked around the dark cavernous landscape of my heart and mind and spirit. I met Fear and Shame and Doubt and Silence and Solitude.

But as I wrestled with them, I came across a friend. Her name is Hope. When you bring Hope into the room, then you can see what you did not see before. You see Joy, you see ladybugs, you see the deliciousness of your desires. Suddenly your complexity is no longer burdensome but widly interesting.

Stay with Hope long enough and you will see your True Self.
